History

In 1874 money was donated to the town of Caerwys towards the building of a ‘Caerwys Room’.  A further donation was provided towards the setting up of a ‘Workingmen’s Institute’.  Eventually both these donations were combined, and with further funding raised by public subscription, it was decided to build a Public Hall.  In 1883 Eleanor Edwards of Canol-y-Dre, Mostyn Square, and her daughter Anne Davies Hughes, donated a piece of land on South Street for this project.

During construction of the building six stone tablets were sunk into the frontage, below and alongside the windows.  These tablets were erected in appreciation of the substantial donations provided and Caerwys Town Hall was eventually opened in January 1885.

The agreement was that the building would belong to the people of Caerwys, with the running and upkeep to be administered by a Committee of Trustees. The Hall is still administered by Trustees, who are local people from the community, together with Town Council representation.

Modernisation

The town hall was upgraded in 1986/87, mainly through funding from the then Delyn Borough Council.   More recently the town hall has again undergone some major changes, this time funded by Welsh Government Grants available during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020/22.  A new heating system, modern kitchen, disabled facilities and new internal doors were installed, together with a full redecoration, sanded and varnished floors and new window blinds to complete the hall’s smart new look.

Current uses

The Hall is of multi-use both during the daytime and evening.  Regular weekly bookings include classes in Martial Arts, Pilates and two separate yoga classes.  Regular monthly bookings include Caerwys WI meetings and Historical Society lectures.  There are also bookings for Christenings, special anniversaries, wedding preparations, birthday parties, private functions and a series of craft fairs.

The Hall is the venue for many regular events in the town, such as ABC Drama productions, the Mayor’s Civic Sunday Reception, film nights, music nights, the popular Brains, Skill & Chance competition and many fundraising activities for local groups.   It is also used by the Local Member of Parliament and Assembly Member to hold their constituency surgeries, and as a Polling Station during local and national elections. The Hall has kitchen facilities, together with crockery for over 100 people. The kitchen can be turned into a fully fitted bar when necessary (subject to the usual licensing requirements). The Hall has a stage system that can be tailored to various sizes, a public address system and ceiling height stage lighting equipment.
